Biography
Seth Lloyd is professor of Quantum Mechanical Engineering at MIT. Dr. Lloyd's research focuses on problems on information and complexity in the universe. In 1993, Dr. Lloyd created the first technologically realizable model for quantum computation, showing how to perform universal quantum logic gates using the interaction between light and atoms, and how to wire those gates together to construct a quantum computer. Dr. Lloyd worked with experimental collaborators to create the first atom-optical quantum logic gate, to perform the first quantum algorithm, and to design and build the first superconducting qubits. His work has established fundamental physical limits to computation, quantum communication, and precision measurement. Dr. Lloyd created the first algorithm for quantum simulation, and is co-discoverer of the quantum linear systems algorithm, the capacity of the quantum communication channel, and multiple algorithms for quantum machine learning and quantum AI. He is author of over three hundred scientific papers, and of `Programming the Universe,' (Knopf, 2006).
